Please support an online petition available at https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/623554, which a friend of ours with close links to the palace has launched, seeking to change the name of the “Order of the British Empire” to the “Order of the British Commonwealth”. The Black Lives Matter campaign has quite rightly highlighted the injustices and atrocities perpetrated in the past, during a period in our history which we should rightly take time to reflect upon. The “Empire” has been replaced by the Commonwealth. Its success and its diversity is a striking part of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s legacy. She played a vital role in reinforcing and uniting the links of the Commonwealth, which connects people together across the world. During her reign, Her Late Majesty grew the Commonwealth of Nations from just seven to 56 members representing more than a third of the world’s population and in excess of 2.5 billion people. She undertook over 200 visits to Commonwealth countries and visited almost every single country within it during her long reign with us. Now that we are outside the period of national mourning, this formal petition has been commenced. We would encourage people to get behind it. It requires 10,000 petitions for the government to respond to it. It only looks to affect future awards; not past ones.
