Did you know that more than 3,300 workers at 70 UK employers are currently participating in a trial where they are working 80% of their time (over a four day week for a full-time employee) whilst still receiving 100% of their pay? In return, they have made a commitment to maintain 100% productivity throughout the entirety of their (reduced) working time. This is what we call a 100:80:100 model, where the trial is designed to ascertain whether or not its participants can work just as effectively in 80% of their normal hours of work, compared with 100% of them, whilst gaining an extra day of personal time and without this damaging their employer’s business. The type of employers trialling this working pattern range from local chip shops to large financial firms to workplace consultancies to digital marketing companies. The trial is due to end in November 2022. Whilst it is underway, researchers are working with each participating organisation to measure the impact of this arrangement on productivity in the business on the one hand and the wellbeing of its workers on the other. A report completed by a job site, CV-Library, has found that adverts for four day working week positions have recently jumped by around 90%. Government-backed four day working week trials are also due to begin later this year in Spain and in Scotland.
